Make it a Habit!
Did you know that it takes seven weeks to break a habit? On the flip side, it takes seven weeks to make a habit. For students, the end of the summer is a great time to get ready to start new habits in your new place with new people and new resources. Make some habits with the 7 in 7 Plan.
The 7 in 7 Plan gives you seven ideas to start your new year at school. Choose some or all of the habits and in seven weeks, they will become part of your routine.
1. Carry your insurance card and understand how to use your health insurance plan
What you do about health insurance this summer will make a difference all year long. Aetna Student Health (ASH), for example, works with colleges and universities to make sure students are covered for all the situations that may come up during a semester.
-

-

-
Does your plan provide wellness programs?
-
If you are on your parents’ plan, does it allow you to continue past ages 19 or 23?
2. Building an emotional, mental and spiritual routine
In addition to academics and study requirements, it’s important to have routines for your emotional and spiritual health.
- Locate a church, synagogue, mosque or ecumenical center and speak to a clergy member.
- In conjunction with your health services center, ASH offers counseling and student assistance. If you need a counselor, check with the center.
- ASH also offers a 24-hour nurse line for your health questions.
- Get to know your Resident Assistant. He or she can offer advice and guidance in many areas.
- Try something new: meet new friends, learn to play bridge, join a book club, look on your school website for events, or check the student activities boards.
3. Get some sleep
Regular bed times make a difference in your energy level, your ability to learn and your health. Try to get in to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time in the morning.
4. Move it
Another energy boost is exercise. Visit the school health center, join an intramural team, find a gym or a fitness class, look for scenic walking or biking paths or play a pick-up game with your dormmates. Visit the school health club and ask for fitness options.
5. Take care of your smile
Taking care of your teeth is as important as taking care of your health. Check to see if your school offers Aetna AdvantageTM Dental, Aetna Dental ®PPO, Aetna Dental ®Indemnity plan or Vital Savings on Dental. Find Your School.
6. Find a drugstore
If you’re new on campus, be sure you know where the drugstore is to fill any prescription you might have. Enter the pharmacy phone number into your cellphone. Notify your doctor about where to call in the prescriptions. Find a Drugstore.
