Choose your health plan coverage
All students must take action on their health coverage. You can enroll in the student health insurance plan. Or, you can waive it with proof of other qualifying coverage.
Be sure to make your selection before the deadline to avoid automatic enrollment and charges.

Enroll in student health coverage
Need health insurance for the school year? The student health plan offers nationwide coverage designed for your needs.
To enroll, you’ll need your school-issued student ID number.
Waive your student health coverage
Already have health insurance? If you’re covered under another qualifying plan—like a parent’s, spouse’s, or employer’s—you can waive the student health plan. You can waive the Rice insurance plan only if your current health insurance meets all university requirements.
Be ready to provide accurate coverage details; your waive may be audited. Before you start the waiver process, you’ll need:
- Your health insurance ID card
- A Brochure or detailed description of your plan
To waive coverage, you’ll need your school-issued student ID number.
Be sure to enroll or waive coverage
If you don’t take action to enroll in or waive the Rice student health insurance plan, you’ll be automatically enrolled and charged. Once enrolled, coverage cannot be cancelled for any reason.
Make sure to enter your waiver information properly. Incorrect or incomplete entries may cause you to fail the audit.
Current coverage lapse?
An approved waiver applies to the full academic year. If your current coverage ends mid-year, contact studentinsurance@rice.edu to explore enrolling in the Aetna Student Health plan.
Dental plan and dental savings plan
You can choose between two dental plans. Our traditional dental plan provides comprehensive coverage, including regular check-ups and treatments. The dental savings plan gives you discounts on many dental services.
Both plans let you see quality dentists near campus. Pick the one that works best for your needs and budget.
Vision plan
At Aetna, we make it easy to take care of your eye health. This means more time to focus on your studies. Our vision plans give you easy access to eye care, including exams, glasses and contacts. Choose from over 170,000 providers nationwide. Even popular retailers. You can shop online too.
